Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT)

DBT was created by Dr. Marsha Linehan who is an American Psychologist and professor who teaches at the University of Washington, my alma mater. She developed DBT as a treatment for people with complex disorders of emotional and mood dysregulation. Although DBT is primarily used to treat those suffering from Borderline Personality Disorder, Eating Disorders, and Substance Abuse Disorders, it also offers effective concepts and skills to treat disorders such as Anxiety, Depression, and Trauma.

How does DBT Work?

DBT works by helping people identify and positively change negative thinking patterns. DBT targets reactive emotions by pointing out things like ‘black and white thinking’ and impulsive behaviours. I teach people how to use their “Wise Mind” as well as skills such as mindfulness, distress tolerance, interpersonal effectiveness.

DBT can be particularly helpful if you have a hard time dealing with intense emotions and regulating your moods. It is also great for people who feel empty or hopeless or who have unstable relationships. I encourage DBT for anyone struggling with mental health issues or clients that have tried other therapies that have not worked as well as they had hoped.
